Abstract

This survey aimed to identify the 5 common disabilities present in Barangay Sta. Lucia Area G, Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan, Cavite as to February 1999. Data were collected by the researchers, through house -to-house survey using an interview schedule guide from two hundred their (230) households with a total of one thousand eighteen (1,018) individuals as a sample population with a total of four thousand six hundred ninety-two (4,692). Any member if the family who is knowledgeable about family matters was interviewed. Data collected were organized and put into tables for analysis. Data showed that three hundred five(305) subject of the 1,018 subjects in Barangay Sta. Lucia had either single or multiple disabilities. Results showed that communication, selfcare, locomotion, mobility/transfer, and sphincter control are the most common disabilities found in Barangay Sta. Lucia, Area G, Dasmariñas, Bagong Bayan, Cavite. the said disabilities were common among married, middle adulthood (41-65 yrs of old), male member of the community and are non-employed. The authors recommend that a patients education program focusing on what the disabilities are, its prevention and management through work simplification and modification be implemented in the form of seminars to health care workers and member of the community. Training manual can be used by health care workers to educate the community. The nature of early treatment program is inexpensive ad can easily be carried out in a home program basis.
