Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the five most common impairements leading to disabilty in Barnagay San Esteban Area 1, Dasmariñas, Cavite from January 1997 to Decemeber 1998. One hundred fifty households (30% from the total households) with a total population of 630 (15%) of the total population of Barangay San Esteban) were included in the study. Data were collected using a written disability survey form patterned after the combination of the World Health Organization (WHO) questionnaire which was translated in Filipino and the disability survey from of the Community-Oriented Rehabilitaiton Program (CORP) of the College of Physical Therapy of De La Salle University which was modifed and adpted by the authors to meet the objectives of this study. Overall, only 154 individuals (equivalent to 24% of the total population included in the study) had an at least one existing impairements, while the remaining 28 merely had at least one disability problem without prior medical confirmation or diagnosis. The five most common impairements leading to disability in the barangay were: 1) arthritis, 2) asthma, 3) pulmonary tubercolosis, 4) hypertension and 5) heart disease. Males were more affected. FOur of the five most common impairments identified, namely, arthritis, pulmonary tubercolosis, hypertension and heart disease, were observed to occur more frequently to the middle adult age group. While asthma was observed to occur more frequently to the early adulth age group. The unemployed group were mostly affected. Visual disability was the leading disability problem observed in the community. The authors respectfully recommend that the CORP of the College of the Physical therapy of De La Salle University to conduct an awareness program in Barangay San Esteban, Area 1, Dasmariñas, Cavite encouraging active community participation, to include at least an education concerning the prevailing health problems and the methods of preventing and controlling them which addresses the main health problems of the community, providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services accordingly and responds to the expressed health needs of the community as expressed in this study.
