Abstract
A disability survey was done in Barangay Sto. Cristo, Area 1, Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan, Cavite to identify the five most common disabilities present in the barangay and determine its relation to the socio-demographic profile of a disabled individual. 50 households with 235 members were surveyed, which is 12% of the entire household population of 419. Results of the survey are as follows: 12 households with 68 house members were recorded to have some form of disability. 82% of the disabled individuals had multiple impairments. Self care disabilities were the most common disability followed by locomotion, breathing, sight and transfer disabilities. Female were most prone to disabilities with breathing aged more than 60 years. Married individuals were more predisposed to disabilities as compared to singles. 87% of disabled individuals had blue collars jobs. However, self care disabilities were very prominent in both white collar and blue collar jobs. Disabilites were equally in both medical/surgical and neurological conditions. Breathing difficulty was the mahor disability problem for medical/surgical conditions while locomotion for neurological cases. The most common disability causing disease is stroke/CVA followed by pulmonary conditions, disabilities, heart disease and arthritis. The authors recommend that the barangay be informed of the existing impairments and disabilities in their community and that early intervention through physical therapy is needed to avoid further progression of disabilities. Prevention management should also be emphasized through Community Based Rehabilitation Program.
