Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the most effective among the three most common treatment modalities for pitting edema in the lower extremities done in De LA Salle University Medical Center Rehabilitation Department and Dr. Jose P. Rizal National Medical Research Center Hospital Rehabilitation Department namely Faradism Under Pressure (fup) with elevation, Compressive garments with elevation and Massage with elevation. 18 patients with pitting edema on lower extremities were included in this study. The authors used the secondary data in the form of clinic record (PT notes) of in -patients reffered between the months of January 1998 to December 1999. by relying on Limb Girth Measurements coming from the notes done by PT interns , patients trated with Faradism Under Pressure (FUP) with elevation showed the most effective in reducing pitting edema on lower extremities compared to the two. The authors would like to recommend that FUP with elevation is the treatment of choice for treating pitting edema on the lower extremity compared to compressive garments with elevation and massage with elevation. Also further experimental study regarding the effectivity of FUP with elevation be made while taking into consideration the underlying pathology or disease entity of the subjects.
