Abstract

This study aims to determine the 5 most common musculoskeletal complaints among professional ballet dancers of Ballet Manila. The authors also aim to describe the sociodemographic profile of the respondents as to age, sex, duration and frequency of rehearsal; to describe the nature of the most common complaints as to their location and onset; and to determine the population of professional ballet dancers who sought consultation to paramedical professionals and other health care givers. The results of the study will concentrate on the musculoskeletal problems to serve as baseline information regrading the role of physical therapist in the filed of ballet. This is a descriptive type of study utilized questionnaires as survey instruments. The population under study included all professional ballet dancers of Ballet Manila which amounted to a total of twenty respondents. The study was conducted at the Ballet Studio in Donada St. Pasay City, Metro Manila where the researchers distributed questionnaires to the said subjects. After analyzing the data using statistical computation, it was obtained that muscle pain/spasm/cramps was the most common musculoskeletal complaint, followed by joint pain, stiffness, weakness, and limitation of motion. It was also found out that these musculoskeletal compliants were common female professional ballett dancers within the 20-24 age group, who spends at least 8-10 hours for rehearsals, 6 days/week. As for location of musculoskeletal complaints, the back is the most common site and these complaints are frequently experienced after ballet activities. The researchers recommended a more extensive study should be done to widen its scope. This new research should include a larger number of respondents and other population groups from different ballet institutions. The samples should be equally distributed among both sexes for easier correction with the type and location of each musculoskeletal complaint.
