Abstract

This study aimed to identify the common disabilities that are present in Barangay Medicion I-B Imus, Cavite. Data were collected using the interview schedule method form 202 households with a study population of 806. The researchers went on a house survey with the questionnaire forms. The head of the family was initially interviewed and in case of his absence, any reliable member of the family, to the individuals disabilities. Data collected were organized and put into tables and graphs for analysis, data showed that 188 members of the 806 population had either single or multiple disabilities, a total of 180 different disabilities were identified. Results showed the following (1) 23.32% of the study population had disability (2) the 5 most common disabilities found were all orthopedic in nature and are as follows: difficulty in maintaining a certain body position, difficulty in moving the arm/hand/fingers and the feet, difficulty in rising or moving to and out of the bed, difficulty in walking and unusual curvature of the spine.(3) The sociodemographic profile of these disabled individuals were seen to be between 41-65 years old, males with housewives and drivers equal in distribution. The authors recommend that an information dissemination campaign be undertaken through distribution of pamphlets to the community regarding their disabilities and way on how to treat and prevent their occurrence. the authors also recommend that this study may be shown to local health workers in the community so as for them to carry out necessary program to enlighten the community so as for them to carry out necessary program to enlighten the community on the different types of disabilities.
