Abstract

The survey aimed to identify the most common disabilities present in Barangay San Juan Area G, Dasmariñas, Cavite as of June 1999 . The authors decided to perform this survey to know the population of disabled Filipino citizens in this community. The results obtained can be used as a guide in designing training programs for local health workers and in determining whether a rehabilitation center within the community is necessary. Out of 580, 290 households with a population of 1,652 members was chosen through random sampling. Data were gathered by the researchers with the help of Barangay health workers through house to house survey using guideline questionnaires. Any member of the family who are capable of understanding the survey was chosen to be the respondent. Questions were asked to the respondents while the researchers check the corresponding items related to the answer. Data collected was carefully organized and presented through tables. data gathered revealed that out of 1,652 members of the study population, only 138 (18%) are disabled while the rest (92%) have no disability of any kind. The two leading type of disability identified were Physical (86%), and Mental (14%) disabilities. Orthopedic cases were found to be the most common physical disability among middle adult female members of the community. Housewives (29%), Unemployed people (20%), and market vendors (11%) were most at risk to disabilities. Financial instability was sited to have the highest impact among the disabled population. The authors therefore concluded that physical disability is most prevalent in Brgy. San Juan Area G, Dasmariñas, Cavite and is usually among the middle adult age group female members of the community. Among the respondents with disabilities, majority of them (29%) were housewives. The researchers recommend immediate implementation of Community Based Rehabilitation Program in Brgy. San Juan to provide alternative means of educating the people regarding existing disabilities in their community. Dissemination of information early on will eliminate irreversible disabilities. Early prevention programs like distribution of manual about how to observe proper back posture to avoid LBP or how to cope with debilitating effects of Arthritis can be done to prevent increase in disabled individuals among the residents of Brgy. San Juan Area G.
