Abstract

This study aims to determine the most common musculoskeletal injuries of jockeys from the Manila jockey Club. This was conducted in San Lazaro Hippodrome in Sta. Cruz Manila. Study was conducted in San Lazaro Hippodrome in Sta. Cruz Manila. Study population was composed of 22 jockeys. One on one interview was done. Gathered data then were organized in tables & graphs and presented in terms of frequencies and percentages. Results of the study showed that majority of jockeys are from ages early 20s to late 30s having work experience of less than 10 years. A great number jockeys experienced delayed onset muscle soreness by 91% , muscle strain by 59%, fracture by 55% & dislocation by 32%. These injuries frequently occurred in the trunk (59%) upper extremity (32%), lower extremity (9%) . 20 out of 22 jockeys required hospitalization. But only 27% underwent PT rehabilitation and 73% did not seek PT intervention as they claimed to have no knowledge on PT. Overall, 59% of the subjects claimed hindrance in riding from their musculoskeletal injuries. The authors recommend that horse jockeys should be oriented on the advantages of undergoing PT rehabilitation for their musculoskeletal injuries, and be educated on the proper exercise procedures to prevent, if not , lessen injuries. Further study is encouraged to identify the real causes of these musculoskeletal injuries in the different areas of horse racing.
