Abstract

The survey in two public and wo private schools in Las Piñas City was a conducted to compare the level of awareness of selected public and private fourth year high school students regarding physical therapy as a profession, whether these students consider it as an important part of the medical field and in the care and rehabilitation of patients, the leading clinical condition these students believe will benefit most of physical therapy and the misconceptions regarding the works of a physical therapist. The study was conducted in Las Piñas City in selected private schools namely, Blessed trinity School (Pilar) and Our Lady of Pilar Montessori School (Pilar) and from two difference public schools namely, Verdant Public School (Las Piñas) and Las Piñas Municipal high School. Questionnaires were used in the study as a method of data collection. The total sample size (180) answered the same set of questions wherein ninety (90) are from private schools and ninety (90) as well from public schools. Data gathered were analyzed descriptively and presented through tables. The results showed that majority of fourth year high school students from selected public schools were uncertain of physical therapy as a profession as compared to fourth year high school students from private schools. On the other hand, majority of fourth year high school students from selected private schools was more aware of the profession and considered it important in the medical field. Majority of fourth year high school students from both public and private schools were aware of the role and function of physical therapist in the care and rehabilitation of patients. From the viewpoint of these graduating public and private high school students, orthopedic conditions such as fractures (public school) and sprains (private schools) were the most common clinical conditions that will benefit from physical therapy followed by neurologic conditions such as stroke. Majority of the respondents from both private and public schools misunderstood the works of a physical therapist to a reflexologist. As recommendations, the authors would like to suggest the use of pamphlets and conducting career talks for these graduating high school students to increase their level of awareness regarding Physical therapy.
