Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effects of McKenie Approach as treatment for low back pain secondary to herniated nucleus pulposus in the Manila Rehabilitation Center in terms of trunk ROM, pain relief , and ADL function. The researchers used a descriptive method of research wherein questionnaire were used to gather the necessary information. There were 20 subjects with equal distribution of sex and with a mean age of 40.9 yrs. old, all suffering from chronic LBP secondary to herniated nucleus pulposus in Manila Rehabilitation Center, Tondo, Manila. Questionnaires were both to the patient and their respective PT interns . Data gathered were tabulated according to Sociodemographic data: age & sex; Clinical profile: duration of pain before seeking interventions, and reaction of patients toward performing the Mckenie exercise; and responses of subjects to McKenie approach which showed improvements as resulted to education in apin scale, increasing trunk ROM flexibility as to flexion, extension, and lateral flexion to the right, and lateral flexion to the left, and improvement as to FIM. Based from the results of our data regarding the effect of McKenie approach, we arrived with the conclusion that the Mckenie approach has an advantageous effect on treatment of chronic low back pain patients in terms of reduction of pain, improvement of trunk ROM flexibility, and overall ADL functional capabilities based from the data of the 1st and the 8th treatment session. This study would be of significant value to PT interns and professional as to use of the Mckenie approach in dealing with patients suffering from chronic low back pain secondary to HNP. The researchers would like to recommend to future researchers regarding the effect of the mckenie approach that they should consider the subject occupation and lifestyle since they are also predisposing factors to low back pain; use greater number of subjects and be able to control the group that they would use to have consistency of certain condition to be conducted. They should also have a well scheduled time frame for each subject particularly the patients schedule, to avoid some inconsistencies such as progress monitoring. We also recommend that future researchers should monitor the time or day that the patient felt relief or comfort immediately after intervention was done on LBP since this is the main aim of the MCkenie Approach. The topic that we have studied so far is classified under the general heading of a descriptive research. It provides useful information about the sample of our study. On the other hand, the so-called inferential method which is a formalized body of tecnique used to make conclusions about populations based on samples taken from the population would be a better method because it can provide a very concrete result of the significant statistical value needed to come up with the conclusion. Lastly, an experimental study for this research would be a of great importance since the researchers would have the chance to handle their subjects personally and apply specific tests that will provide them with these needed details and information.
