Abstract

This is an analytical cross-sectional study comparing a Modified versus Standard pamphlets in improving the patient's knowledge about osteoarthritis, compliance and Activities of Daily Living of discharged Osteoarthritic patients. The study covered 16 osteoarthritic patients who were discharged for at least 2 months in San Juan Nepomuceno PT clinic in Alfonso, Cavite. By random sampling, eight patients were given a Modified pamphlet and the other eight where given the Standard Pamphlet. The patient's knowledge and ADL status were both assessed before and after the study period of 3 weeks. The patients were also given a wallet size calendar to document the dates when the exercises were done. A questionnaire, written in tagalog, was also given to assess the patient's perception of the pamphlet's content, illustration, presentation, and effectiveness. The researchers also conclude that both pamphlets were effective in increasing ADL performance, patient's knowledge and prevention of secondary musculoskeletal complications. However, improvement was more significant in patients who received Modified Pamphlet most probably due to its extensive content and illustrations. Though the study revealed that the differences in the appearance and content between the two pamphlets were not statistically significant in increasing the patient's compliance to the treatment, patient who received Modified pamphlet, on the average, showed to be more compliant that patients with Standard pamphlet. This may also be due to the extensive content, illustration, and better presentation of Modified Pamphlet.
