Abstract

This study is significant for monitoring compliance of burn patients to home instructions at Dr. Jose P. Reyes Memorial Medical Center in order to determine factors that effect compliance and to correlate sociodemographic variables and clinical profiles and their compliance to physical therapy home instructions for the improvement of strategies to have an effective home instructions. A total of 10 out of 13 discharged in-patients and outpatients from August 1 to November 31,2001 were given a set of home instructions and calendar sheets to be marked every time exercise was performed for 30 days and the researchers measured their compliance as to correctness of exercise performance. Data analysis was done through Chi-square test that was used to know if there is or there is no significant correlation between compliance and sociodemographic variables & clinical profiles. Through ratio analysis, researchers were able to designate the subjects' compliance whether they were compliant or no-compliant according to age, sex, educational attainment, employment status, civil status, type of burn, degree of burn and body area involved. After gathering all the necessary data, the researchers concluded that there is no significant correlation between burn patient's sociodemographic variables and clinical profiles and their compliance to physical therapy home instructions at Dr. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. However, clinical profiles have the closest possibility for a significant correlation. On our body, Compliance is highest on patients who are aged 15-29 years old, females. undergraduates, unemployed, married, subjects with thermal burn, with first degree burn and with involvement of the upper extremities. This study will give for health professionals and physical therapists on giving thorough, clear, and concise home instructions to the patients and caregivers to reach the rehabilitation goals.
