Abstract

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a surgical procedure to replace all or part of the hip with an artificial device to restore joint movement. The greater the incidence of THA is in patient between the ages 65-79. Variations in usage exist by georgraphic location, age, sex and race. The most common complications are not directly related to the hip and do not usually affect the result of the operation. Operation takes approximately 2 hours and hospital stay lasts for 15 to 25 days. Rehabilitation usually starts one to three days after the operation. In a study regarding weight bearing of THA patient revealed peak contact pressure in the acetabulum were highest during full weight bearing, where as the lowest stresses were generated with toe-touch weight bearing. Intermediate were generated under partial weight bearing conditions. Contact pressure as high as those in partial weight bearing generated with non-weight bearing ambulation if the knee is in extended position. Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the association of selected demographic data (age and sex) and selected clinical factors (duration of hospitalization, timing of PT intervention, iniation of weight bearing activity and the presence or absence of complication) with the early discharge of patients status post hip arthroplasty. Methods: The research utilized an analytic type of research design. a strata of hospitals were selected using simple random sampling. 30 patients were gathered who met the inclusion criteria set beforehand. After data gathering, findings were tallied using frequency distribution table. Chi square test was used to associate a variable with a specific outcome. Statistical test data were analyzed both descriptively analytically. Results: From a study population of 30 patients, 83% were female. Most came from the age group 71-81 years old. Duration of hospitalization averaged 17 days and mean of weight bearing status after operation is 5 days. Only 17% suffered a complication. Conclusion: All demographic variables were not found to be associated with the discharge status of the patients status post total hip arthoplasty except one of the clinical factors investigated in the study which was the early iniation of weight bearing activity.
