Abstract

The study was done to determine the relationship of sitting balance and functional use of the upper extremities of stroke patients in selected hospitals in Cavite. the study utilized the significant relationship between the sitting balance and functional use of the upper extremity of the stroke patients involved in the study when they are grouped according to age, sex and handedness , and that there is no significant relationship between sitting balance and functional use of upper extremity among stroke patients involved in the study. the respondents of the necessary demographic data, the respondents sitting balance was determined. Each of the respondents were then asked to perform different activities (pegboard, shape sorter, and OT pillow activity) while seated with both feet flat on the ground and then with the legs dangling. The time allotted in performing each activity was recorded to serve as a measure of efficiency in terms of the respondents upper extremity function. Gathered data were summarized through frequency distribution tables. Variables were categorized as to the respondents age, sex, handedness, side of affectation, diagnosis the different activities were determined and then compared. The gathered data showed that there was no significant relationship between sitting balance and functional use of the upper extremities of the stroke patients included in the study . As such, it was concluded than the level of upper extremity function while in a seated position is not only dependent on ones sitting balance but also on other factors that are not considered in the study.
