Abstract

According to Braddom (2000) , in the industrialized world, low back pain is second only to headache as a cause of pain. It is the leading cause of expenditure for workers compensation. 50-80% of adults will have low back pain at some time in their lives. Lower back problems can occur for many different reasons and one of which is disc herniation. The terms dics herniation, herniated nucleus pulposus, slipped disc or disc hernia mean that the content of the intervertebral disc is out of place. A herniated disc is a fragment of the disc nucleus which is pushed out of the outher disc margin, into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture and occurs most often in the lumbar region, L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels. It occurs frequently in middle ages and common in males. Several factors seem to influence the occurrence of herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP). Etiology of lumbar HNP has revealed smoking to be a risk factor. Prolonged sitting position increases pressure on the sine as well as driving for long hours. Repetitive stress on the spine contributes to HNP to occur, like works requiring lifting, forceful movements, bending and twisting into awkward position and whole body vibrations. the objective of this study is to know the top 3 most common risk factors of disc herniation among employees and to provide them informations on how to prevent low back pain and reoccurrence of disc herniation.
