Abstract

This is a descriptive study that determined the prevalence of mechanical low back pain among stevedores in Shell gas company in Tabangao City, Batangas. A total of 147 stvedore workers were included in the study. Results of the study showed that majority (77.55%) of them experience mechanical low back pain. Most stevedores who experience LBP are in the age bracket of 31-40 (35.96%), and are married 86 (75.43%). A total of 68 (59.64%) stevedores work more than >8 hours a day. 72 (63.15%) works >5 days a week. And 62 (54.38%) participants are working within the soan of 2-5 years. There are 92 (80.70) stevedores carry >11 kilograms that they are assigned to carry. In 147 stevedores only 102 (89.47%) stevedores use special equipment, followed by 11 (10.78%) participants stated that they only use the trolley followed by 8 (7.94%) participants stated that they are able to utilize the inclined plane and 2 (1.96%) participants stated that they only used the pulley. All 114 (100%) always perform bending of the trunk rotation during work and 91 (79.82%) claimed that they frequently perform repetitive motions such as frequent standing and sitting, while 82 (71.92%) claimed that they frequently perform frequent pulling and pushing. While 78 (68.42%) of them claimed that they claimed to have a > 1 hour break time the researchers conclude that the Prevalence of mechanical LBP among male stevedores in Shell Philippines in Batangas city was 77.55%. This data clearly showed that more than 3/4 of production of work and service to the consumers. The researchers suggest to provide each stevedores with an individual manual or pamphlets written in tagalog and to have group seminar on the company that will instruct them the above programs for better understanding or possible to have a film presentation for proper utilization and understanding of mechanical LBP.
