Abstract

To determine the psychosexual needs of patients with Spinal Cord Injury at the Philippine Orthopedic Center. Research Design: Descriptive. Setting: Out-patient Physical Rehabilitation Department at the Philippine Orthopedic Center at Banawe Street, Quezon City. The study composed of 50 male patients. Patients in the out-patients department were personally interviewed by the researchers. Questions were explained to the respondents and answers were written down by the researchers. Main outcome measures: Answers were tailed using frequency count and percentage computation as statistical treatment. Data was analyzed descriptively using tables. Results showed that majority of the respondents are within mid-thristies to mid-forties (35-45 yrs. old). Most of them are married (68%). Majority have high school education (46%). Ninety-two percent were diagnosed < 6 months. In sexual desire, there is 90% need for broad sexual interest. For sexual arousal, there is 86% need for penile erection and let the gained arousal be maintained (80%). In sexual self-concept. 76% showed there is a need to be physically, emotionally, psychological and socially fit to be sexually active for their partners. The most important psychosexual need it self competency being highest followed by sexual desire, sexual rehabilitation as part of the health care system given to the patient. Proper education will make him feel worthy despite his present problems.
