Abstract

This descriptive study determine the level of knowledge of elementary schools in Dasmariñas Cavite regarding scoliosis. A total of 2,127 elementary pupils from different elementary schools: Bautista Elementary School, Pintong Gubat Elementary School, Ramona S. Tirona Memorial School, Sabang Elementary School were included in the study. Majority of elementary pupils are aged 12 years old, female (51.5%) outnumber males (48.5%). Half of the respondents are from grade 6 and the other half are from grade 5. The researchers have utilized a survey questionnaire as an instrument which was answered by 2, 127 elementary pupils in Dasmariñas, Cavite. According to their school, most of respondents are from Dasmariñas Elementary School (26.9%). Regarding the subjects knowledge about description of scoliosis, it was noted that 72.2% viewed that scoliosis has a higher risk of danger, it will lead to compression of internal organs of the body. As to the etiology, majority or 46.4% answered that a child can have scoliosis due to mother's negligence. And in prevention, 76% of respondents believed that scoliosis can be prevented through proper body alignment and posture especially in sitting and and proper exercise. After a careful study, the researchers concluded that majority of the elementary pupils from selected public elementary school in Dasmariñas, Cavite have moderate knowledge regarding scoliosis as to description etiology and prevention.
