Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression among geriatric patients at De La Salle-Health Sciences Campus affiliated centers in Cavite for the year 2005-2006. The main objective of the study is to determine the level of depression among geriatric patients with depression according to : age, gender, civil status, available support system, both financial and emotional and existing medical condition. The study used a descriptive type of research design. The instrumental used was the form that identified the demographic profile of the patient and the geriatric depression scale by Yesavage et.al, (1982). A total of 102 subjects were used as respondents with age ranging from 65 years and above from the affiliated centers in Cavite particularly De La Salle University Medical Center and Jose P. Rizal Hospital in Dasmariñas, General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital in Trece Martires City. In this study results have shown that 49% of the respondents are depressed. It showed that almost half of the respondents are depressed. Geriatric depression as to age was found to be within the age range of 65-74 years of age, followed by the 75-84 years of age. As to gender, it showed that geriatirc depression was more prevalent in females (60%) than in males (40%). As to civil status, it was found that even married elderly are prone to having depression (62%), and followed by widowed elderly (32%). Results as to the available support system have shown elderly were emotionally supported by their children (94%) as well as financially supported by their children (80%). Results as to existing medical condition have shown that majority of the geriattic patients with depression has stroke (62%). According to the level of depression among 50 geriatric patients, results showed that 94% of the respondents were mildly depressed and only 6% were severely depressed. When subcategorized, it was found that it was normal according to moods, mildly depressed according to emotions, life perspectives, self-worthiness and worries, but severely depressed as to socialization. In conclusion, the prevalence of depression among geriatric patients in Cavite for the year 2005-2006 is 49%. Majority of the geriatric patients with depression are severely depressed as to socialization (67%) which was the most significant and normal as to moods, which was the least significant value (30%). It shows that depression is prevalent among elderly, especially those with existing medical condition. So therefore, it is important for physical therapist to know whether patients that are bein treated in the rehabilitation are predisposed to having depression, so as to give emotional support to their patients and for better progression of their treatment
