Abstract

This is a descriptive study aimed to determine the coping strategies of stroke survivors in selected rehabilitation centers in Cavite. The study consists of 50 stroke survivors from different centers in Cavite namely Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Center, St. Paul Hospital and De La Salle University Medical Center as respondents. COPE inventory was used as a questionnaire with some modification made by the researchers so as to inquire on the respondents socio-demographic and clinical profile. The respondents were chosen using purposive sampling based on the following inclusion criteria: willing to participate and patients with stroke. They were excluded if they have an affectation of right hemisphere as it will compromise patients cognition and judgment. Results of the study showed that from the 15 coping strategies, religious coping, positive reinterpretation and growth, planning, seeking of emotional social support, use of instrumental social support, active coping, suppression of competing activities, focus on and venting of emotions, mental disengagement, restraint, and acceptance were usually used by the stroke survivors. Denial, behavioral disengagement, and humor were used sometimes and substance use was not at all used by the stroke survivors. The most commonly used coping strategy was religious coping and the least used by the stroke survivors was substance abuse. The researchers then recommend to conduct a follow-up study on the effectiveness of the coping strategies as well as the factors influencing them.
