Abstract

This is a descriptive study that determines the level of competency of clinical instructors of the affiliated clinics of DLSHSI College of Physical Therapy for S.Y. 2010-2011. The level of competency was described as to demonstration of legal and ethical behavior in PT practice, effective communication skills, effective behavior, conduct and skill in interpersonal realtionship, demonstration of career and self development, effective instructional skills, effective evaluation skills were determined. A total of 34 clinical instructors from different affiliated centers of DLSHSI participated in the study. The researchers made use of the APTA Guidelines and Self-Assessments for Clinical Education as a guide for making the questionnaire given to the respondents. Results of the study showed that majority or 18 of the respondents were clinical staff with at least one year experience of being a clinical instructor, handling seven patient in a day and supervising five interns. Results of the study shows that the clinical instructors are competent to a great extent in areas of demonstration of legal and ethical behavior (4.36), behavioral conduct and skills in interpersonal relationship (4.02), demonstration of effective communication skills (3.98), effective instructional skills (3.69), career and self-development (3.63), supervisory skills (3.60), The clincal instructors are competent to a moderate extent when it comes to demonstration of evaluation skills (3.4) based on the computed mean score. Furthermore, study also showed that staffs with more than 1 year of clinical experience, handling 4 patients a day and supervising two interns are competent to a great extent.
