Abstract
The researchers conducted this descriptive exploratory type of research study following the general objective. That is, to explore the relationship patterns of clinical profile with personal profile and work profile of patients with osteoarthritis (OA). The researchers then formulated several specific objectives to meet the general objective. First, the researchers aimed to determine the clinical profile as to joints involved, duration of the OA, and severity of the OA. Second, the authors aimed to determine the personal profile as to age, gender, hobbies and comorbidities. The third objective was to determine the work profile of the participants. This included: previous occupation, current occupation, nature of work, hours of work, and years in work. The fourth objective was to explore relationship patterns of personal profile with the clinical profile of OA patients in two hospitals in Cavite. The fifth and last objective was to explore relationship patterns of work profile with the clinical profile of OA patients in the same two hospitals in Cavite. The respondents of the study included 14 patients, from the clinics of De La Salle University Medical Center and Divine Grace Medical Center, diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Survey questionnaires were distributed to participants present in the clinics. Data gather during the implementation were then tallied and summarized into tables. These tables were used by the researchers, to find or explore any patterns in the patient profiles. The results of the study can be beneficial to several students, professors, future thesis researchers, patients with osteoarthritis, and members of the rehabilitation team. Based on the results of the respondents’ clinical profile, majority of the patients have four (4) to five (5) year old diagnosed knee osteoarthritis, with a Kellgren and Lawrence score of Grade 2 to 3. Majority of the respondents were composed women, aged 50-65 years old, without comorbidities and hobbies. In terms of previous occupation, most of them were in managerial positions. These participants were placed under major groups 1 to 4. However, respondents currently in non-managerial occupations were more common. Respondents reported no restrictions in performing most activities, such as bending, squatting, kneeling, prolonged standing, lifting heavy loads, and repetitive hand movements. In terms of nature of work as to prolonged sitting, there was an equal number of respondents who had no restrictions and those who could only sit for 30 minutes. Lastly, majority of the respondents could only perform stair climbing in their own pace. As for the current nature of work, most respondents reported no restrictions in performing lifting and in performing activities requiring repetitive hand movements. Participants, however, only reported performing some of the activities repetitively for 30 or 60 minutes, or in their own pace. These activities include: bending, kneeling, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and stair climbing. Most of the respondents work seven (7) to eight (8) hours a day, with majority of them already being in their current occupations for 7 years. Personal profile as to age, gender, and hobbies may have an impact on clinical profile, as evidenced by some literature. Personal profile as to comorbidities may not have any impact on clinical profiles. Contrastingly, work profile as to previous and current occupations may have an impact on clinical profile, depending on the individuals’ nature of work and years at work.
