Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a significant worldwide health issue. The Philippines is ranked fourth among the 30 nations with a high burden of TB and second among the countries with a high burden of multiple drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB). This study developed a flip chart on Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DRTB) and assessed the level of understanding of Tuberculosis (TB) patients at a selected PPM DOTS Center in Dasmarinas, Cavite. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized through two assessment tools, particularly pre and post-assessment tests, and the intervention used was the developed flip chart. The participants were selected using a convenience sampling method with 53 respondents (39 with TB; 14 without TB). The results showed that the post-test scores were higher than the pre-assessment scores by negative z-values, indicating that the flip chart was adequate and that the participants' understanding increased. Moreover, 26.42% of the participants achieved an excellent level of understanding, while 73.58% of the participants had a good understanding of the flip chart. It was also noted that participants have misconceptions regarding TB, 67.92% in the causation and 64.15% in the transmission. In conclusion, an increase in the participant's level of understanding can be attributed to the effectiveness of the flip chart on DRTB as the intervention. The participants' feedback during the post-evaluation also suggested that the developed flip chart was an effective tool for educating the participants.
