Abstract
This quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study assessed the factors affecting medication adherence of hypertensive patients practicing polypharmacy in GMA, Cavite. 51 respondents were obtained using purposive sampling, and their sociodemographic profiles were determined. Results showed that the majority were 50–59 years old (88.2%), female (64.7%), had finished elementary or secondary education (76.5%), were unemployed (72.5%), used five medicines (84.3%) for at least four months (88.2%), and had at least one comorbidity (43.1%). The research utilized a modified Medication Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire (MKAQ) and Medication Adherence Rating Scale-10 (MARS-10) to determine their medication knowledge and medication adherence. 84.3% had excellent medication knowledge from doctors (95.9%) and barangay health workers (62.5%), while 60.8% of the respondents adhered to their therapies. Additionally, statistical analysis utilized Chi-square, wherein age had the highest correlation with the level of medication knowledge (0.255), while the number of medicines had the lowest (-0.033). Length of therapy had the highest correlation (0.405) with medication adherence, and educational attainment had the lowest (-0.074). Lastly, the level of medication knowledge and medication adherence gained a weak positive monotonic relationship (0.244). In conclusion, sociodemographic profiles and medication knowledge had a weak correlation with medication adherence.
