Abstract

This study focused on developing a deeper understanding of the experiences of patients undergoing Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Therapy as an adjuvant treatment for Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, and how they were able to manage and cope with the challenges encountered relative to the therapy. To investigate the phenomenon, the researchers utilized a qualitative research design. The researchers identified three major themes that emerged from the participants’ shared experiences, supported by subthemes, respectively: (1) “Navigating the Unknown” discusses the participants’ expectations and preparations prior to treatment; (2) “Braving Treatment” highlights experiences during the therapy, focusing on psychological and emotional adjustments during the period of isolation after radiopharmaceutical administration; and lastly, (3) “Seeing Through New Eyes” focuses on experiences post-treatment, emphasizing the shift in their daily routines after therapy and how they were able to cope with it. Holistically looking through the patients’ experiences further recognizes the importance of ensuring that physical and psychological needs are addressed throughout the course of the therapy.
