Abstract
The purpose of the study was: 1. To determine the degree of pain felt by patients who underwent normal spontaneous delivery and utilized the five step relaxation training and those who did not. 2. To know if there is a significant difference on the degree of pain felt by the patients who utilized the five step relaxation training and those who did not. The study was conducted at Dr. Jose P. Rizal Research and Medical Center OB ward in Dasmarinas Cavite. A modified Melzack and Wall And Chamber's and Price's tool on pain assessment was used as well as a Filipino translation of the Five Step Relaxation Training which was developed by Sharon Scandrett which was used to provide relaxation therapy. The modified pain assessment tool was used to assess the pain experience and the effect of the five step relaxation training to NSD (normal spontaneous delivery) patients within the age bracket of 20-35 years old. There were 30 respondents involved. Fifteen (15) were for the experimental group subjected to the five step relaxation training. Another fifteen (15) for the controlled group which did not use the training, they were given analgesics instead. The respondents should have a complaint of pain, has episiotomy, has no complications whatsoever and primigravida up to gravida 3 para 3. The gathered data was analyzed through the use of statistical tests which were average weighted mean, standard deviation, mean and the t-test for independent means. As an offshoot of this research study, the following conclusion were drawn: 1. The experimental group which consisted of patients who underwent normal spontaneous delivery had lesser degree of pain after having the five-step relaxation training than the control group which consisted of patients who did not have the training used in this study. 2. There is a significant difference as to the degree of pain felt by the patients of both groups. The use of the five step relaxation training reduced significantly the degree of pain of those patients who underwent the training than those who did not.
