Abstract

The purpose of the study is to describe the lived experience of sophomore nursing students during their initial administration of intramuscular injection using a phenomenological approach resulting in phenomenological description of themes or patterns of initial administration of intramuscular injection.  After the researcher analyzed and studied the experience of selected second year nursing students during their initial administration, researchers found out that the respondents have different reaction to initial administration of intramuscular injection such as fear and avoidance. The effects of these were exhibited from respondents' bodily reaction such as mild tremors of the hand, crying and disorganization of thoughts. The factors that caused these emotions were the presence of clinical instructor, reinforcing either confidence or fear, presence of relative, the age and the appearance of the patient. Some of the respondents verbalized that the procedure helped to increase their self confidence and self-esteem. The experiences of selected sophomore nursing students varied individually. They have different reactions, feelings and emotions. The bodily reactions, exhibited by the respondents differ from another. There are a lot of factors that affect their initial administration of injection.
