Abstract

Specifically it aimed the following: 1. Find out the profile of the grandparents of the high school students in terms of age, economic status, educational attainment and demographic location. 2. Find out the perception of the high school regarding the role of their grandparents as a. friend b, adviser c. surrogate parent d. financial provider e. mediator 3. Find out the significant difference on the perception of high school students regarding the role of their grandparents when they are grouped according to: a. friend b, adviser c. surrogate parent d. financial provider e. mediator The study was conducted at Dasmariñas National High School, Dasmariñas, Cavite. The respondents were 100 high school students with grandparents ages 40 and above who live with them. The use of convenience sampling was done to gather the data needed. The questionnaire deals with the role of the grandparents in terms of friend, adviser, surrogate, parent, financial provider and mediator. The following findings were drawn in the study: 1. Most of the grandparents when grouped according to age belonged to 61 years old and above, economically, most of the grandparents were with financial resources, while educationally, majority of them were under from the Luzon area. 2. With regards to the grandparents when grouped according to age: 40-60 years old, adviser, 61 and above, surrogate parent. When grouped according to economic status, grandparents with financial resources acted as adviser; without financial resources grandparents acted as surrogate parent. Furthermore the role of grandparents, when grouped according to educational attainment, was adviser for elementary level, financial provider for high school level and surrogate parent for college and vocational level. With regards to the demographic location, those in the Luzon area as acted adviser, while those in Visayas and Mindanao area, as financial provider. 3. T-test showed that there was no significant difference on the perception of high school students regarding the role of grandparents when grouped according to age and economic status. F-test showed that there was no significant difference on the perception of high school students regarding the role of the grandparents when grouped according to educational attainment and demographic location. In the light of the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the grandparents are 60 years old and above with financial resources. Most of them reached elementary level and majority of them were in the Luzon area. 2. The roles of grandparent were the following: friend, financial provider, surrogate parents, adviser and mediator. The researchers concluded that friend, financial providerm surrogate parent and adviser were the highest perceived roles performed as always, while the least role was being a mediator. 3. The role of grandparents based on the result does not vary, when grouped according to age, educational attainment, economic status and demographic location. There are no significant differences on the perception of high school students regarding the role of their grandparents. Therefore, it implies that the grandparents in themselves are perceived as having inherent features of being surrogate parent, adviser, financial provider, friend and mediator.
