Abstract

This study used a phenomenological approach of qualitative research. The participants were the ten (10) mothers of nursing students studying in De La Salle University- Dasmariñas who were interviewed regarding the live experience of parenting. They were drawn using the purposive sampling. The researchers personally interviewed the informants using an audiotape and verbatim transcription. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method of phenomenology. The major findings were the following: 1.) The respondents have identified caring behaviors like sense of independence, listening, provision of safety and security, giving encouragement, supportive behavior, and advising. 2.) The difficulties experienced by mothers have been divided into emotional and financial. Emotional difficulties are mainly anxiety and apprehension related to late at night or early morning classes, duties and intimate relationship. Financial difficulties are directed more on the high cost of nursing education nowadays. 3.) Coping mechanisms include: proper allotment of financial resources, cutting down of unnecessary expenses, and anticipation of upcoming expenses. 4.) Consolation of mothers came from their children’s persistence to study hard and application of their knowledge at home and the community. Mothers’ dreams to the child were to graduate and pursue a higher education (medicine). 5.) Mothers want their children to value education so as to financially secure and successful. Mothers’ success is based on seeing their children stable and successful in their chosen field.
