Abstract

This study aimed to determine the coping strategies of the selected women on menopausal stage in Bacoor, Cavite. This study aimed to determine the following: 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of: a) age on the onset of menopause b) civil status c) educational attainment d) employment status 2. Degree of emotional, physiological and psychosexual changes accompanying menopause of selected women in Bacoor, Cavite. 3. Emotional, physiological, and psychosexual coping strategies of the selected women in Bacoor, Cavite. 4. Determine if there is a significant difference on the coping strategies utilized by menopausal women when they grouped according to: a) age on the onset of menopause b) civil status c) educational attainment d) employment status. Thirty (30) women who are currently experiencing menopause and those who have been on their menopausal stage not more than one to two years are the respondents of this study. The study is conducted in selected areas in Bacoor, Cavite. Assessment of the changes that are experienced by the respondents are investigated. Researchers focus on the coping strategies that are utilized by the respondents. The following are drawn from the investigation: 1. Profile of the respondents, ages 49-51 is 40%, seventy-six percent (76%) is married, seventy percent (70%) has attained a college degree and seventy percent (70%) is non-working. 2. The study showed that the degree of physiological changes has the highest result with a mean score of 0.83, followed by emotional changes with a mean score of 0.80 (high degree of changes), while psychological changes give a mean score of 0.63 which indicate moderate degree of change. 3. Most of the respondents utilized positive coping strategies on the emotional, physiological, and psychosexual aspect. Findings also revealed that negative coping strategies like cigarette smoking are seldom used. Coping strategies that brought an impact is like the knowledge and application regarding the consultation with an OB-GYN. This indicate that only small number of women have time to visit their OB-GYN. 4. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference on the coping strategies utilized by menopause women when they are grouped according to: a) age on the onset of menopause b) civil status c) educational attainment and d) employment status. Majority of the respondents experience cessation of menstruation as a sign on the onset of menopause at the age of 49 to 51 years. Most of the respondents are married and degree holder, however, majority of them are non-working. Findings revealed that most of the changes experienced by menopausal women are physiological changes like irregularity of menstrual cycle. Though this women experienced a varying degree of emotional, physiological and psychosexual changes still they can cope to this certain stage of their life by utilizing and practicing positive coping strategies. The study also revealed that acceptance of the transition has been recognized by the respondents thus, they view and react to the changes positively. As the researchers go through the study, they have found out that there is a significant difference on the coping strategies utilized by the respondents in terms of age on the onset of menopause, civil status, educational attainment, and employment status. Therefore, the stated variables imply that coping strategies varies from one respondents to other respondents.
