Abstract

PURPOSE STATEMENT: This study attempted to uncover and understand the different experiences of mothers of children with Down Syndrome. Through their day to day experiences with their children with Down Syndrome, the study gave an in depth meaning of their roles as the mothers. The study aimed to answer the grand tour question: "What are your experiences as a mother of a child with Down Syndrome?" ( Anu-ano ang inyong mga karanasan bilang isang ina na may anak na may Down Syndrome?)

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY: This study is confined to the day-to-day experiences of mothers of children with Down Syndrome. The study uncovered the mothers who are residents of Cavite and nearby districts. They were gathered according to their willingness to become participants of the study. Their lived experiences as biological mothers who are directly involved with raising their children with Down Syndrome was the main focus of the study. However, the study does not intend only made a full scale generalization of the experiences of all mothers of children with Down Syndrome but to make a representation of each participant's experiences. This study did not limit the participants in terms of age, educational attainment, religion, occupation, social status, and civil status.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: The study aims to lead to the realization of the lived experiences of mothers of children with Down Syndrome. In addition, the study hopes to be beneficial to the following: Participants. This study gives them a chance to relay their actual day-to-day experiences on how it is to live as mothers of children with Down Syndrome. With this, the participants' life stories may help enlighten other people in similar situation. Nursing Education. Through this study, information regarding Down Syndrome will moy only focus on the children affected by it and the disabilities that go with it, but also the importance of the roles of the mothers in the development of their childrens' condition. Along with it, holistic approach in dealing with children with Down Syndrome would be given emphasis. Nursing Practice. Actual experiences of mothers would make nurses aware on how to enhance and improve further the provision of quality professional care for children with Down Syndrome and their mothers. The study will also serve as basis for an effective intervention program customized for children with Down Syndrome which include involvement of mothers and other family members. Nurses can have collaborative interactions with mothers through information gathered from the study. To Nursing Research. This study contains valuable data which may be used to address the special needs of mothers of children with Down Syndrome, and utilize it to enhance certain nursing assessment and interventions.
