Abstract

The study utilized a non-experimental descriptive design. The respondents of this study were 100 patients, 20 to 60 years of age, male and female, conscious, communicative and coherent, who can understand Filipino and/or English language, admitted for at least 3 days, confined in the medical-surgical wards of DLSUMC, and were willing to participate in the study. The researchers used both purposive and convenience type of sampling. It utilized a self-made questionnaire composed of 15 items, which was constructed in English and Filipino language to determine the perception of selected patients in DLSUMC on the effectiveness of therapeutic communication rendered by nurses on the adherence to medical regimen. The following standardized measures were used in answering the specific problems, analyzing the data and testing the hypothesis of the study: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, f-test or ANOVA and t-test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the patients in the medical-surgical wards of DLSUMC are 20 to 40 years old, female, married, obtained college level of education, with a total monthly income of P5,001-P20,000 and are hospitalized for 3 to 5 days; 2) The respondents agree that therapeutic communication rendered by nurses is effective on the adherence to medical regimen; 3) There are no significant differences on the perception of the respondents regarding the effectiveness of therapeutic communication when grouped according to age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, total monthly income and length of hospitalization.
