Abstract

The study utilized a descriptive non-experimental type of research design. The respondents of the study consisted of 200 second year De La Salle students from two campuses of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI) and De La Salle University-Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) who are officially enrolled students of the said institutions. The research instrument was formulated and was validated by the five (5) selected faculty members of the College of Nursing and School of Midwifery of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute. There were 20 respondents asked to answer the questionnaire for pretesting using purposive sampling. The study concluded that; 1) Majority of the respondents are female, aged 16-19 years old, Catholic and with a monthly family income of P30,001 and above. For the types of medication taken with its frequency, analgesics is taken at a frequency of once a day, three times (3) a day, four (4) times a day and as necessary, while antibiotics are taken two (2) times a day. For the types of medication taken with its duration, analgesics is take in a duration of one (1) day, two (2) days, three (3) days and as needed or as long with fever, while antibiotics is taken in one (1) week; 2) The factors such as nature of illness, socio-economic and cultural beliefs and practices sometimes affect the self-medication practices among the respondents; 3) There is no significant difference in self-medication practices of the respondents in terms of gender, age, religion, monthly family income, types of medication (antibiotics, antihistamines, analgesics, herbal medicines) in terms of frequency and types of medication (antihistamines and analgesics) in terms of duration. On the other hand, there is a significant difference in self-medication practices of the respondents in terms of types of medication (anti-diarrheal), in terms of frequency and types of medication(antibiotics, anti-diarrheal and herbal medicines) in terms of duration.
