Abstract

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) presents with abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, affecting all age groups worldwide. Despite its high prevalence, standardized, evidence-based nursing management remains limited, with inconsistent guidelines across organizations. Guided by Orlando's Nursing Process Theory and Abdellah’s Typology of Nursing Problems, this systematic review evaluates current nursing interventions, identifies research gaps, and emphasizes the need for prioritized nursing strategies to reduce the severity of AGE. Using PRISMA guidelines, this review systematically analyzed 14 studies through a narrative synthesis approach. Studies were selected using a structured PICO-based search strategy across multiple databases. Interventions were categorized by AGE severity (mild, moderate, severe) and aligned with the guiding nursing theories. The review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42025642230). Out of the 14 studies, eight focused on fluid management, primarily comparing oral rehydration therapy (ORT) with intravenous therapy (IVT). These studies emphasized the importance of matching fluid therapy to symptom severity, particularly in pediatric cases. Clear guidelines were identified for choosing ORT or IVT based on clinical assessment, underscoring the critical nursing role in managing dehydration and monitoring patient response.
