Abstract

Objectives of the Study General This research study primarily aimed to determine the prevalence of compassion fatigue among staff nurses in Dasmariñas, Cavite, and identify their experiences with compassion fatigue.

What is the prevalence of compassion fatigue among staff nurses in the city of Dasmariñas? 3. What are the experiences of staff nurses on compassion fatigue? 4. To what extent do the quantitative data and qualitative data on compassion fatigue converge or diverge?

Methodology A convergent mixed method research design was used to determine the prevalence of compassion fatigue among staff nurses in Dasmariñas, Cavite, identify their experiences with compassion fatigue, and ascertain the extent to which the quantitative and qualitative data converge or diverge.

Major findings The following results were acquired from the study: 1. The majority of the respondents were 19-39 years old, female, had 2. a monthly family income of P15,001-30,000, had 1 to 3 years of clinical experience, worked in the clinical wards, had a nurse-patient ratio of 1:6-10, and worked on a 12-hour shift. 3. Many respondents (45.58%) had extremely high levels of compassion fatigue. 4. The experiences of the participants were categorized into four major themes: “inefficient work management,” “psychosomatic symptoms,” “interpersonal conflicts,” and “mechanisms and management of fatigue.” The themes were further divided into eight subthemes. 5. The quantitative and qualitative data of the study purely converged as the results from the quantitative data were supported by their experiences.

The majority of the respondents were 19-39 years old, female; worked in the clinical wards, on a 12-hour shift; with a monthly family income of P15,001-30,000, 1-3 years of clinical experience, and nurse-patient ratio of 1:6-10. 2. Many respondents experienced extremely high compassion fatigue. 3. Four themes and eight sub-themes were identified. 4. The quantitative data and qualitative data converged. 5. Unequal distribution of participants may bias results towards Hospital A.
