Abstract

Objectives of the Study: General Objective This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and attitude among staff nurses working in selected hospitals located in Dasmariñas, Cavite, about the provision of palliative care.

Specific Objective The study aimed to address specific research inquiries, including: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to age, sex, highest educational attainment, area of assignment, years of experience, and training or seminar in palliative care? 2. What is the level of knowledge of nurses towards palliative care? 3. What is the attitude of nurses towards providing palliative care? 4. Is there a significant difference in the level of knowledge according to age, sex, highest educational attainment, area of assignment, years of experience, and training or seminar in palliative care? 5. Is there a significant difference in the attitude of nurses towards palliative care when they are grouped according to age, sex, highest educational attainment, area of assignment, years of experience, and training or seminar in palliative care?

Methodology The research employed a Non-experimental Quantitative Descriptive Design to determine the level of knowledge and attitude of staff nurses towards palliative care. Moreover, the study adapted the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN) by Ross et al. (1996) to determine the level of knowledge and the Frommelt Attitude Towards Care for the Dying by Frommelt (2003) to determine the attitude. Purposive sampling was utilized to select respondents suitable for the study. The data were gathered from 173 staff nurses in selected hospitals in Dasmariñas, Cavite. The study utilized the following statistical tests to answer the specific problem and test the study’s hypothesis: (a) Frequency, (b) Mean, (c) Percentage, (d) Standard Deviation, (e) ANOVA, (f) Kruskal Wallis H Test, (g) Mann Whitney U, and (h) T-test.

Findings The following findings were drawn from the study: 1. Most respondents are 25 years old and below, females with a bachelor’s degree, and are assigned to the Medical-Surgical Ward. Moreover, most respondents have less than five years of experience, and a large percentage of them have attended training or seminars on palliative care. 2. The overall level of knowledge of the staff nurses resulted in good palliative care. 3. The researchers found that the attitude of staff nurses towards palliative care is positive. 4. There is no significant difference in staff nurses' knowledge of palliative care when grouped according to age, sex, highest educational attainment, area of assignment, years of experience, and training or seminars attended. 5. There is no significant difference in the attitude of the staff nurses towards palliative care when grouped according to age, sex, highest educational attainment, area of assignment, years of experience, and training or seminar.

Conclusion The data analyzed revealed that most respondents demonstrate good knowledge and a positive attitude toward palliative care. Furthermore, upon conducting a more in-depth analysis, it was noted that the respondent's level of knowledge and attitude toward palliative care is the same regardless of their demographics.
