Abstract
Objectives of the Study: General: The research seeks to examine the dementia prevention lifestyle activities of older persons in Pasong Buaya II, Imus, Cavite, with a specific focus on physical activity, sociocultural practices, nutrition, and cognitive activities. Specific: Specifically, the study sought to determine the following: 1. The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, religion, and educational attainment. 2. The dementia prevention lifestyle activities of older persons in Pasong Buaya II, Imus, Cavite. 3. If there is a significant difference in the dementia prevention lifestyle activities of the older persons in Pasong Buaya II, Imus, Cavite when grouped according to age, sex, religion and educational attainment.
Methodology: The research design utilized a descriptive quantitative design. A total of 327 respondents have participated in the study from Brgy. Pasong Buaya II, Imus, Cavite. The sampling design used was non-probability, purposive sampling with Yamane’s (1967) formula for sample size computation. The inclusion criteria in the selection of respondents are a) either male or female, b) at least 60 years old and above, and c) able to do activities of daily living. The statistical tools used were percentage and frequency, mean and standard deviation, t-test, and ANOVA.
Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from the study: 1. Out of 327 respondents, the majority are between ages 65 to 74 years old counting to 153 or 46.8%, 208 or 63.6% are females, 269 or 82.3% are Catholic, and 92 or 28.1% graduated from college. 2. The dementia prevention lifestyle activities of 327 respondents based on their average mean are nutrition (2.89), sleep (2.82), physical activity (2.53), socio-cultural (2.38), and cognitive enhancement (2.37). 3. The significant differences in the dementia prevention activities of the respondents when grouped into age (physical, p = < 0.001; socio-cultural, p = 0.001; nutrition, p = 0.008; and cognitive enhancement, p = < 0.001), sex (physical, p = 0.038), religion (socio-cultural, p = < 0.001 and cognitive enhancement, p = 0.003), and educational attainment (socio-cultural, p = 0.025; nutrition, p = 0.013; and cognitive enhancement, p = < 0.001).
Conclusions: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The majority of the respondents are females ranging between the ages of 65 - 74, of Catholic religion, and are college graduates. 2. Among the five domains of dementia prevention lifestyle activities most respondents prioritized nutrition-related activities the most, whereas they prioritized cognitive enhancement-related activities the least. 3. Findings show that the sleep domain does not show any significant differences regardless of age, sex, religion and educational attainment however other domains show significant differences when grouped into the demographics.
