Abstract
Objectives of the Study: The study was primarily undertaken to determine the knowledge and level of compliance on safe waste disposal among housekeeping staff of selected level II hospitals in Cavite. Specifically, this study sought to determine the (1) Profile of the housekeeping staff when they are grouped according to age, sex, seminars attended, and length of experience, (2) the current knowledge of the housekeepers on safe waste disposal practices, and (3) the level of compliance of the housekeeping staff with applying safe waste disposal practices in the hospital.
Methodology: The study utilized a Descriptive Type of Design to determine the profile, current knowledge, and level of compliance of housekeeping staff at their employed hospital regarding safe waste disposal. Hence, the degree of assessments for knowledge and level of compliance were further differentiated when grouped according to selected demographic profile variables, such as age, sex, had or had not attended a seminar, and length of experience.
Major Findings: This research study has criteria that include age, sex, attended seminars, and length of experience. The findings from the 90 respondents of the study are as follows: ● Age: Those within the age range of 18 to 29 years account for 33 (36.7%) respondents, while the lowest number of respondents, 1 (1.1%), fall within the age range of 54 to 60 years. ● Sex: Females account for 46 (51.1%) respondents, while males account for 44 (48.9%) respondents. ● Attended Seminars: The respondents who have attended seminars total 73 (81.1%), whereas those who have not attended seminars amount to 17 (18.9%). ● Length of Experience: Those with between 1 year and less than 5 years of experience constitute 50 (56%) respondents, while the lowest number, 1 (1%) respondent, have between 10 years and less than 15 years of experience. ● Knowledge: The average level of knowledge is found in 59 (65.6%) respondents, a high level of knowledge in 30 (30.3%) respondents, and a poor level of knowledge in 1 (1.1%) respondent. ● Compliance: There are 3 (3.3%) respondents who are not compliant, while 87 (97.7%) respondents are compliant.
Conclusions: The findings of the study reveal that, in order for the hospital housekeeping staff to have proper knowledge and compliance with safe waste disposal, routine seminars, programs, or training are essential. This is crucial as they are exposed to hazards that may pose health risks due to their role in handling various types of waste, including hazardous waste, to ensure the cleanliness of the environment and the safety of the community.
