Abstract
Purpose Statement The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to describe the experiences of rejection in clinical settings for nursing students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). The participants were asked the grand tour question: “What were your experiences of rejection as a nursing student in clinical settings?”
Scope and Limitations This research focused on the rejection experiences of nursing students enrolled in the nursing program at DLSMHSI, specifically year levels 3 and 4, focusing on the medical surgical ward. The study centers on the subjective experiences of the participants.
Methodology The study adopted a descriptive qualitative design for exploring and describing rejection as experienced by nursing students in clinical settings. The sampling method used was purposive sampling. Data collection was done through face-to-face and online interviews with the participants. The researchers utilized Colaizzi’s approach for data analysis.
Findings Three (3) major themes were identified. "Everything: Nursing Students and their Rejection Experiences," "Everywhere: Rejection and its Lasting Psycho-Emotional Effects on Nursing Students," and "All At Once: The Aftermath of Rejection on Nursing Students” described the rejection experiences of the participants in the clinical settings.
Recommendations The following are recommendations based on the findings of the study. Incoming nursing students should mentally prepare themselves for rejection. Student nurses should use rejection experiences for growth and practice self-care techniques. Clinical instructors should provide post rotation conferences and debriefings. Future researchers are encouraged to focus on how rejection influences the stress levels of nursing students or the identification of support systems and coping mechanisms they utilize.
