Abstract
Objectives of the Study The study was primarily conducted to determine the challenges and opportunities in clinical experience of male student nurses in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. Specifically, the study sought to determine the following: 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of age, year level, and religion. 2. Challenges of the respondents in their clinical experience. 3. Opportunities for the respondents in their clinical experience. 4. Any significant difference in the challenges and opportunities of male student nurses during their clinical experience when grouped according to their demographic profile.
Methodology The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach. It utilized purposive sampling combined with stratified random sampling in selecting the respondents. A self-made questionnaire categorized into four sections was used with a 4-point Likert Scale. Moreover, the data gathering was conducted face-to-face via pen and paper, and the data was analyzed using Frequency Distribution, Percentage, Weighted Mean, ANOVA, and T-test.
Major Findings The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. Out of the 132 respondents, 37.12% are between 18 to 20 and 62.88% are between 21 to 25. Regarding year level, there were 35.61% 3rd years, 33.33% 2nd years, and 31.06% 4th years. In terms of religion, 79.55% are Catholics, while 21.45% are non-Catholics. 2. The overall challenges had an average mean of 2.03, indicated as less challenging. The Physiological-Physical mode had the highest mean of 2.14, interpreted as less challenging, while the Self-Concept Group Identity Mode had the lowest mean of 1.84, classified as less challenging. 3. The overall opportunities garnered an average mean of 3.26, implying more opportunities. The Self-Concept Group Identity Mode attained the highest mean of 3.51, considered as more opportunities, while the lowest mean of 2.92, was attributed to Role Function Mode, still interpreted as more opportunities. 4. There was no significant difference betweem the challenges and opportunities of the respondents as shown in the p-value of each category in terms of age (p = 0.138 and p = 0.549), year level (p = 0.138 and p = 0.640), and religion (p = 0.512 and p = 0.439). Therefore, accepting the null hypothesis.
Conclusions From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: This study on male student nurses, ages 21 to 25, at De La Salle Medical University Center found they face challenges like inadequate care for female patients and occasional rejection. However, supportive environments and peer recognition boost their confidence during their clinical rotations. The research shows no difference between challenges and opportunities they encounter.
