Abstract

This study explored the psycho-emotional impact of feline companionship among nursing students of De La Salle Medical and Health Science Institute (DLSMHSI), seeking to address the growing need for holistic approaches to mental well-being in academic settings. Rooted in understanding the distinctive stressors inherent in nursing education, this study aimed to uncover the potential therapeutic benefits of cat ownership. A convergent parallel mixed-method (Quan-Qual) design was utilized to unveil the intricate narratives that illuminate the multifaceted experiences of nursing students with their pet cats. Quantitative data was collected through survey forms, while qualitative insights were gathered via semi-structured online interviews with purposively sampled nursing students who own cats. Ethical principles were strictly adhered to throughout all stages of the study. The findings revealed that the feline companionship have significant impact on the psychoemotional well-being (M = 3.57) and has high level of influence in the academic and personal lives (M = 4.10) as perceived by nursing students. Using ANOVA, the study found no significant differences in the perceived psycho-emotional impact of feline companionship among nursing students based on sex (t = .428, p = .671), year level (F = 1.211, p = .318), and duration of companionship (F = .312, p = .734) thus, the null hypothesis is not rejected. Thematic analysis of qualitative data unveiled deep emotional connections, transformative companionship dynamics, and diverse benefits of pet ownership on students’ lives, and concurs with the perceived positive psycho-emotional impact on their well-being. The feline companionship significantly impacts nursing students' psycho-emotional health, fostering increased comfort, support, and relaxation. These findings advocate for integrating alternative stress-alleviation methods, like pet companionship, to enhance student well-being.
