Abstract

The researchers used a Descriptive Analytical Method. The researchers considered this the most appropriate design since it can systematically and accurately describe a situation, population, or phenomenon. The researchers took a quantitative approach when gathering data by using a self-made 4-point Likert Scale survey questionnaire. The consent form, along with the questionnaire, were disseminated using Google Forms. Purposive sampling was used. Data was analyzed through frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Based on the foregoing findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) Majority of the respondents (a) are between 20-21 years old (41%), and (b) are female nursing students (60.8%); 2) Regular physical exercise is very effective in ages 20 - 21 and 22 above, and regular physical exercise is effective in ages 18 - 19 for the mental health of nursing students; 3) The respondents’ perception of regular physical exercise was very effective on their mental health; 4) There were significant difference/s in the perceived effectiveness of regular physical exercise on the mental health of DLSMSHI nursing students when grouped according to age and sex. Despite the differences in age and sex, the DLSMSHI nursing students perceived regular physical exercise to be effective on their mental health; 5) The researchers believe that the difference between ages 18-19 perceiving regular physical exercise as effective on their mental health and ages 20 and above perceiving it as very effective may be the result of how those age groups perceive their life in general. It is possible that the ages 20 and above realized and believed that there is an importance in having a healthy body and mind, which could be achieved through regular physical exercise. This may also be the case for the students in the age groups 18-19; however, the majority still comes from the ages 20 and above, and this may be because the students from the 18-19 age group have just come from senior high school and some if not most are still in a lifestyle of enjoying their daily lives in a more leisure way and have not yet come to realize the importance of incorporating regular physical exercise into their daily lives and its probable benefits to them whether mentally or physically; 6) The researchers believe that males perceive regular physical exercise as very effective while females perceive it as effective may be due to how they perceive their gender roles or self. Just like how it is stereotyped, males may believe that they need to look more muscular, be stronger, and physically fit as compared with females; thus, having more desire to do regular physical exercise as compared with women and perceiving it to be more effective, whether it is for their mental health or their physical appearance. On the other hand, females may not perceive regular physical exercise as very effective; however, they still do perceive it as effective since some, if not most, women also have the belief and desire to be physically fit.
