Abstract

The study used phenomenological research design using purposive sampling and snowball sampling. There were 6 participants were interviewed. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was chosen to analyze the data. The findings of the study are the following: Using the phases of the butterfly as a metaphor in the data analysis, the following themes were identified: the first theme is “First the egg”, the second theme is, “The little green caterpillar”, the third theme is, “The Cocoon”, and finally the fourth theme is “Stretching my wings''. The first theme “First the egg”, focuses on the experiences of the participants as they care for their child with learning challenges, in an online learning environment. This theme pertains to what the participants experienced as they shifted into the new normal, from aiding their child in face-to-face classes, to online classes, what changes they experienced when shifting into the new normal, and any relative experience the participant was willing to share. The second theme, “The little green caterpillar”, describes the emotional, mental, and behavioral changes that the participants experienced when shifting into the new normal. With the reality of the pandemic, due to the shift to online classes, what did these participants experience as they aided their child through online learning? In relation to theme one, because of those changes, how was their mental and emotional well-being affected? The third theme, “The Cocoon”, pertains to the methods the participants used in order to cope with these new experiences they previously expressed. During the shift into the new normal, the participants openly talked about their struggles and hardships with the shift, as they aided their child through online learning, so the researchers probed deeper into what strategies, or methods the participants used in order to make the shift to online learning a bit easier. Forming their “Cocoon”, “made” from their coping methods, The last theme, “Stretching my wings”, describes the lessons, and new discoveries that these participants realized after going through this phenomenon. In the previous themes, first was the experiences with the phenomena, then the mental and emotional aspect in dealing with the changes brought about because of the phenomena, the coping with the phenomena, and then finally, the lessons or wisdom gained. In the stages of the butterfly, each stage was used as a metaphor for change and growth. After the participant went through every phase, the outcome is how they grew in understanding, and empathy, and how they grew their “wings”.
