Abstract
The study utilized the descriptive=correlational research design and non-probability purposive sampling technique. A total of 177 respondents were chosen in the study. The research instruments was divided into three parts: the first part consists of the demographic data, the second part is a 13 item self-made questionnaire using a 4 point Likert scale which determined the perceived readiness of the Level II nursing students of DLSMHSI, and lastly a 16 item questionnaire that was adapted and modified from the Brief Cope tool created by Carver (1989) Statistical treatments used in the study were frequency distribution, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U Test and Spearman Rank-order Correlation. From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) Respondents felt overall somewhat ready for clinical duty; 2) Level II nursing students used both problem focused and emotion focused coping strategies to a moderate extent; 3) In perceived readiness to clinical duty when grouped according to age, it can be said that older level II nursing students have a higher sense of perceived readiness for clinical duty than younger level II nursing students. When grouped according to sex, it can be said that regardless of sex, the knowledge and skills of the students are the key importance to readiness for clinical duty; 4) In coping strategies when grouped according to age and sex, it can be said that regardless of the age of the respondents and being a male or female respondent, both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies are applied; 5) Problem-focused and emotion-focused coping was shown to have a positive effect on the level II nursing students perceived readiness for clinical duty. This entails that the more coping strategies that are incorporated, the higher perceived readiness of the respondents.
