Abstract
This study sought to explore the lived experiences of newly employed Filipino nurses working in the United States of America using a qualitative descriptive phenomenological design. Purposive sampling was used in the study. After receiving the approval and consent of the participants, the researchers used video conferencing platforms such as Facebook Messenger, and Google Meet in order to conduct the interview. Each individual interview was transcribed and encoded using Microsoft Excel. This allowed for generating themes and creating discussions. Lastly, the researchers used related literature to support each discussion. Data was analyzed through thematic analysis. After analyzing the data, five themes were identified. The first theme Contrasting Nursing Practice presents the challenges faced by the participants while adjusting to a new environment and providing high-quality patient care by understanding these challenges and having the right support and resources. The second theme Exploring Emotional Landscape describes the initial emotions felt by the participants. Sub-theme A Positive Emotions presents emotions such as motivation, satisfaction, and fulfillment towards their overall work environment. Sub-theme B Negative Emotions discusses feelings of loneliness, homesickness, and regrets upon becoming overwhelmed with challenges in the new workplace. The third theme Adjusting to Cultural, Social, and Linguistic Diversity in the Workplace discusses the challenge of overcoming language barriers, cultural differences, and variations in the participants’ nursing practice and environment. The fourth theme Pathways in Achieving Personal and Professional Skills discusses the participants’ need for independence and their own perception of being able to reach the goals they have set and how to achieve them. The fifth theme Achieving Financial Security presents the participants' personal strategies for handling their personal financial resources while they learn from their experience in working and living in the U.S.A.
