Abstract

This study is a quantitative type of research specifically a descriptive, non-experimental research design. The respondents of the study consisted of 293 Grade 11 and 12 senior high school students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute who have an active account on social media applications. The study utilized a non-probability purposive/judgmental sampling. The instrument utilized for gathering data is a questionnaire. Data was analyzed through t-test, F-test, Standard Deviation and frequency distribution. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents are female, uses Twitter app, access social media at home for more than three times and more than 5 hours a day, 2) Social media use has a great effect on the self-esteem of the respondents both positively and negatively, 3) There are no significant differences in the effects on using social media on the self-esteem of senior high school students in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute when they are grouped according to sex, location where the most frequently used social media platform is accessed, and frequency of using social media. However, there is a significant difference in the effects of social media use on the self-esteem of senior high school students when they are grouped according to the type of social media most frequently used and time spent on social media applications.
