Abstract

This study utilized the descriptive qualitative research approach. A combination of purposive sampling method and snowballing were utilized in this study. There were seven (7) participants in the study, five (5) of whom are student nurses and two 92) are nursing graduates at the time of the study. These participants all experienced losing a patient during their clinical duty hours and were willing and able to share their experiences. Face to face interviews were conducted, and audio recording and notes taking were utilized to collect and record data. Collaizi's method was used for data analysis. From the narrations of student nurses at present and nursing graduates during their student days of their actual experience, a total of 50 significant statements were extracted, from which insights and understanding of the phenomenon of losing a patient were derived. Three (3) themes were identified, with one of the themes having two (2) sub-themes. The first theme was The Lingering Frist Loss, the second theme was Feelings that Come with the Loss and the third theme, Coping by Expressing and Reflecting. The study concluded that losing a patient is one of the most memorable events of their lives while having their duty. Whether a patient's death is expected or not, nursing students can never be totally prepared to deal with such a situation especially if its is their first time to experience losing a patient. Data gathered from the participants involved in this study have proven that difficulty losing a patient as student nurses is somehow still similar to those found in literature dealing with death and dying. However, this experience may help students nurses in preparation for future encounters in terms of their well-being, especially their emotional and mental well-being.
