Abstract
The researchers used a quantitative research design. Purposive sampling was used to choose participants. The respondents of this study were 267 DLSMHSI nursing students coming from first to fourth year levels. The researchers used an online questionnaire, which was a modified tool, in order to determine the respondents' profile and the perception of nursing students of DLSMHSI on the effects of caffeine intake on their academic performances. The following statistical treatments that the researchers utilized in this study: percentage distribution, t-test and F-test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents were (a) female, (b) ages 20-21, (c) end year BS nursing students, (d) usually consume coffee as the caffeinated drink, (e) consume 1-2 servings of caffeine, (f) take caffeine 3-4 times a week, and (g) have 6-7 hours of sleep in a 24-hour schedule during school day, 2) In terms of the respondents' perception on the effects of caffeine, they agree that caffeine aids in their academic performance by helping them to stay awake during school days and allowing them to study for a long period of time. They also have a positive perception on the effects of caffeine on their academic performance with an overall mean 3.00 and SD of 0.43, 3) There are no significant differences in the perception of the respondents on the effects of caffeine intake on their academic performance when grouped according to age and hours of sleep, meaning that they have the same perception when it comes to age and hours of sleep. However, there are significant differences in the perceptions of the respondents on the effects of caffeine intake on academic performance when grouped according to sex, year level, amount of consumption and frequency of caffeine intake, meaning that they have different perceptions when grouped based on sex, year level, amount of consumption and frequency of caffeine intake.
