Abstract

This study utilized a descriptive non-experimental qualitative type of research design. The researchers used records review as a qualitative data collection method. The data of this study were focused on the information of all the admitted clients in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Cavite. The criteria for selecting the patients' chart wre: (a) either male or female, (b) all age groups, (c) all clients that have been admitted to the emergency room department form January 2020 until April 2020. The study excludes other emergency admissions such as (a) pregnancy-related admissions, (b) elective surgery and (c) trauma cases. The instrument that was utilized for this study is a self-made abstraction tool that consists of information that the researcher should collect for the chart review. Data was analyzed through frequency and percentage distribution and Chi-Square Test. The researchers arrived at the following conclusions: 1) Most of the patients admitted in the emergency room of the tertiary hospital in Cavite were adult, female, had been admitted before the COVID-19 pandemic with a topographic classifications of gastrointestinal diseases, 2) Of the 2, 145 admitted patients, before the COVID-19 pandemic gastrointestinal diseases were the leading causes of emergency room admissions, most prevalent among pediatric and adult patients of both sex. While among geriatric patients, the leading causes of emergency room admission were cardiovascular diseases which were second most commonly observed among males, 3) Among 1,838 admitted patients in the early part of COVID-19, cardiovascular diseases were the leading causes of emergency room admissions, more common among male geriatric patients. Among pediatric patients, E.E.N.T. diseases were the leading causes and were more prevalent among females. Admitted adult patients had respiratory diseases as the leading causes, which are second most commonly observed among males, 4) There is a significant difference in the leading causes of emergency room admission in a tertiary hospital in Cavite before and in the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic.
