Abstract

This study answered the following questions: 1. Find out the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, educational background, ethnicity, and support system. 2. Determine the perception on the concept of sexuality among street children. 3. Determine if there is a significant difference on the perception on the concept of sexuality among street children when they are grouped according to age, sex, educational background, ethnicity and support system. A sample of 107 respondents comprising of street children ages 7- 12 years old from Bagong Bayan Dasmarinas, Cavite were drawn using purposive sampling. In the light of the findings, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. Most of the street children were 10-12 years of age. There were mostly male and still studying. Majority were Tagalog and supported by parents. The male children are more exposed to work and the female are expected to help in household chores. These street children are staying on the streets to earn for a living, so that they can support their education because of financial constraint of the parents. 2. Street children agreed that they perceived the concept of sexuality. Mass media has effect on sexuality among teenagers, that is television and other forms of media become the leading source of sex education, these materials offer opportunity to know the secretive world of adult sex. 3. Ethnic affiliation is related to the perception on the concept of sexuality among street children. Respondents who came from other ethnic group perceived the concept of sexuality more often. They can adjust to the changes of their new environment easily, and can acquire new knowledge and ideas easier. Compared to street children here at Dasmarinas, their environment is not new to them, they are used to the way of living, so they are not being attracted nor disturbed to any changes that are happening, and looked at this changes as just normal.
